What is NAET®?

Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique, also known as NAET® is a holistic, non-invasive, safe, effective, natural approach/solution to detecting and eliminating all types of allergies. It is a simple desensitization technique that helps your body accept the environment around you and the foods you eat in a healthy and balanced way.

Identifying and eliminating allergies helps your body return to its normal balance preventing future health problems. Energy is no longer wasted on allergic reactions, but instead can be spent on detoxifying and healing. NAET® re-educates the body to respond appropriately to a substance. Healthy foods and nutrients can then be used for growth and maintenance.

NAET® can successfully eliminate adverse reactions to egg, milk, peanuts, penicillin, aspirin, shellfish, ragweed, flowers, perfume, heat, and other environmental agents to name a few.

A complete list of conditions treated is listed further down on this page.

What are allergies or sensitivities?

An allergy or sensitivity is a problematic reaction your body is having to a substance known as an allergen. It is a disorder of the immune system that causes an allergic reaction that can be triggered from just about anything: food, drinks, drugs, wheat, corn, vitamins, clothing, jewelry, chemicals, animals, paint, silicone, latex, pollen, mold, grasses, etc.

It is a condition of unusual sensitivity in your body to one or more substances that may not cause damage to most people but is harmful to you. In the allergic person, the allergen is viewed by the brain as a threat to the body’s well-being. The allergen produces an energy imbalance in the body leading to a weakened state of health in one or more meridian/organ systems.

There is constant communication between the brain and the body via the nervous system and the allergen can block the body’s electrical circuits disrupting the normal flow of body energy. When contact is made with an allergen, it causes the energy pathways in the body called meridians to be blocked. The blocked energy flow is the first step in a chain of events which can develop into an allergic response.

How do you determine what I am allergic to?

Your body is constantly sending you a message (fatigue, skin rash, running nose, ongoing pain etc.) that it is reacting to an allergen. In some cases, the source of the allergy can be determined. But for most, they do not know how to trace the root of the problem. This is where the NAET® practitioner can be instrumental in quickly finding the source of the allergy.

A NAET® practitioner uses kinesiology or muscle testing techniques (see below for details) to perform simple muscle responses to confirm a suspected allergen. Testing can be done on most everyone including the very young, pregnant woman, the elderly or debilitated. The same process is applied to each individual to determine if the body in question has developed a negative reaction to the environment around it.

The brain recognizes whatever substance comes close to the body, especially what comes in direct contact with it. When an allergen is discovered, it is because the brain has perceived that the substance as a threat to the body. Consequently, the energy flow in a meridian is disrupted and the resulting interferences in communication between the brain and the body evoke a weakness as indicated in the tester muscle. In this way, it is possible to communicate with the patient by triggering a mild response to the body.

In one instance, a patient complained of chronic neck pain. He had been going to a local chiropractor with no lasting results. He came to the Center and in one visit our team was able to help him determine that his body does not process sugar well. In fact, upon reflection, the more intake of sugar the more pain he experienced. The patient was challenged to lessen his intake of sugar (he was drinking sweet tea, coke and eating lots of bread and pasta). Within a few weeks, the patient was pain free and did not have to go back to the chiropractor for an ongoing adjustment. One visit to IHAC gave him the tools to be pain free!

What is muscle testing and how does it work?

What is muscle testing or kinesiology? The core of diagnosing what problem(s) someone has is by using a muscle test. The practitioner directs the patient to outstretch their arm (called the “indicator muscle”).

First, the practitioner checks to see that all meridians are appropriately balanced by touching various points of the body corresponding to different vital organs. The practitioner does this while testing the strength of the patient’s outstretched arm. If any meridians/organs are weak she will charge up that area and test it again until it tests “strong.”

She then tests the patient with a vial to see if they are allergic to the item(s) it contains. (Note: a “vial” is what a NAET® practitioner uses when treating for an allergy. The vial resembles a small test tube. Contained in it is a sample of the item(s) to be treated for). The practitioner places an allergen vial in the patient’s other hand. Then the practitioner will press down on the outstretched arm. The person will have one of two responses:

1. Arm drops down involuntarily when practitioner presses down against it = allergic or sensitivity response

2. Arm does not drop down when practitioner presses down against it = no allergen present

If a person has a sensitivity or allergic reaction to the stimuli (such as mold, yeast, chemicals etc.) the patients arm drops involuntarily when it pressed on it. This is a signal to the practitioner that the patient is having a negative response to the stimuli.

After that, muscle testing is used again to assist the practitioner to determine the best course of action to help the patient that day.

With the treatment of allergies with NAET®, our goal is to make a weak muscle (in the presence of an allergen) respond strong. When there is no longer a weak muscle response, the sensitivity to that substance is gone and the symptoms go away. This process is simple, easy and extremely effective. There are no drugs or needles involved.

In the muscle-testing process, a vial containing a suspected or known allergen is held in one hand while the practitioner applies gentle pressure to the opposite arm determining if there is a strength or weakness of the muscle. If the muscle tests weak, sensitivity to that substance has been accurately identified.

How do you treat my allergies?

Once the allergen is identified, the practitioner administers acupressure on the back along the spine to eliminate the allergy. The treatment is geared to re-program the brain’s inappropriate response towards the allergen to an appropriate response whenever these substances are contacted in the future. This stimulation of the spinal nerves is done without drugs, allergy shots, or invasive entry into the body.

The practitioner then treats specific acupuncture points on the back using light acupressure either by hands or with a pressure device while the patient is holding the allergen in their palm.

Patients are asked to remain for 15-20 minutes in the office after the treatment. That period of time helps the body start to process and accept the internal reprogramming.

Patients are instructed to avoid all contact, if possible, with the allergen that they were just treated for, for 25 hours. Patients are directed to return for retesting between 25 hours and 7 days after the treatment.

NAET® is based on the principle, that “no disease is possible when your body is in perfect balance.” Through NAET®, health is being brought back into a “homeostasis” or perfect energy balance throughout the entire body. NAET® offers an energy medicine solution to allergic conditions by balancing the body and mind through three pathways:

1. Structural
2. Bio-chemical
3. Emotional

Can more than one allergen be treated at one time?

With NAET®, allergens are treated/cleared one at a time, in a specific order. Usually it takes one session to reduce/clear an allergen. We recommend for a 25-hour period you avoid the allergen (if at all possible) being treated so that your body can be re-programmed. If you are highly sensitive to a particular allergen, it may take more than one visit to clear.

Why do you start with the “basics” first?

The basics are 15 foundation points which make the NAET® process effective. They are done in this order: BBF (Brain Body Balance Formula), Egg/Chicken, Calcium/Milk, Vitamin C, B Vitamins, Sugar, Iron, Vitamin A, Minerals, Salts, Grains, Yeast, Acid, Base (Digestive Juices & Enzymes from Intestines) and Hormones.

The basics consist of some of the most commonly eaten foods and the most important nutrients for your body. The reason to start with these is because your body will better process the nutrients from the food you eat every day. In NAET® theory, if one is allergic to a nutrient or a food that contains it, then one’s body is not able to properly absorb and utilize that nutrient.

As a result, even with adequate intake one could end up deficient in that nutrient which could cause serious health consequences. With this foundation, then your body will be better able to build the immune system to eliminate other allergies.

If you are not sensitive to one of the basics then we move on to the next one and so on until your body goes through all 15. It depends on the person how many visits it will take to lay the right foundation.

How long does this clearance last?

In our experience, if clearance is still effective 25 hours after treatment, it is long lasting and should be for the life of the patient. In most cases, we have not seen recurrence of allergies from a successfully treated allergen.

Should I reevaluate what I eat?

Once you have been completely cleared for a particular food or environmental substance, it may no longer be necessary for you to avoid it. The reason we do nutritional assessment and balancing during and after a series of treatments by NAET®, is to restore strength and vitality to the body, which has long been deprived of its proper share of nutrients due to the allergic sensitivity to items in the diet.

During your visits, we will offer suggestions for modification to your diet based on your body’s unique needs. We encourage all patients to eat fresh organic vegetables and fruits and recommend our patients consume a breakfast protein drink in the morning rather than having a traditional breakfast.

Categories of Allergens

NAET® practitioners have learned that allergens can originate from a variety of settings. We have broken the allergens down into the following categories:

Contactants– substances which touch your skin, hair or mucus membranes.
Examples: fabric, shampoo, soap, chemicals, poison ivy, cosmetics, detergent

Infectants – The growth of a parasitic organism within the body.
Examples: virus, bacteria, microorganisms

Ingestants – taking food, liquid, or some other substance into the body by swallowing or absorbing it.
Examples: foods, beverages, vitamins, drugs

Food allergies more frequently occur in children than they do in adults. Common ingestant allergens are milk, eggs, shellfish, fish, peanuts, chocolate, strawberries, tomatoes, and citrus fruits

Inhalants – an intake of breath through the nose or mouth into the lungs.
Examples: dust, pollen, feathers. chemical odors

For instance, hay fever is an inhalant allergy in which the mucous membranes react when you breathe into your lungs. But we have learned “hay fever” may actually be a reaction to pet dander, feathers, mold, or dust.

Injectants – substances that penetrate the skin.
Examples: vaccine, drugs that are injected, antibiotics, insect bites

Those who have a severe allergic reaction to an insect bite or sting are suffering from a reaction to an injectant allergen.

Mold & fungi – yeast like agents causing reaction by contact.
Examples: yeast, mold, mildew

Physical agents – substances with physical properties and effects.
Examples: heat, cold, wind, light, radiation, electricity, people, places

3 Levels of Allergies

1. Physical – if there is a structural or physical response as a result of an allergen, the body might experience pain, stiffness, muscle spasms, etc. Often the allergen is a contactant and the skin may be involved (such as a skin rash).
2. Nutritional – if there is a biochemical or nutritional involvement as a result of an allergen, the allergen could be a food item, or a chemical that entered the body via ingestion, injection, and inhalation. The allergen reacts at the metabolic (cellular) level.
3. Emotional – if there is a psychological or genetic involvement, the allergens may have attached to an emotional trauma or experience.

Can allergies cause real or serious illness?

Yes. For example, when a virus attacks, this sets off a struggle, to rid the body of the invading virus and the symptoms. Fever, coughing, aches, fatigue, vomiting, etc. are signals that the body is trying to throw off the invading virus and its toxins. If a weakened immune system is left untreated, the symptoms increase, sometimes with serious results.

Similarly, continuous contact with an allergen produces toxins in the body, causing similar reactions to occur. An undiagnosed or undetected allergic condition will produce conditions that are equally serious. Many times, the allergic reactions produce symptoms that mimic other conditions. Just about any health condition can be a symptom of underlying allergies.

With NAET® we are confident that we can create a treatment plan that will bear directly on your problem and begin the healing process in your body.

Will I be completely cured of my allergies?

80-90% of the patients treated thus far by NAET® have experienced complete relief from their allergic symptoms to the items for which they have been treated. Most of them report that contact with previously troublesome foods or environmental substances no longer cause adverse effects.

How many sessions are needed to experience a degree of success?

The total length of the treatment program varies greatly from one individual to another, depending upon the number of specific allergies, and the overall intensity of the allergic condition. It may take anywhere from 15 to 40 visits, depending on your condition, to experience significant results. For the best results, usually just one allergen (or one group of closely related allergens) should be identified and treated per office visit. Most clients see an improvement in their symptoms by the 5th NAET® treatment.

What occurs at the first and second NAET® office visit?

Initial office visit – you meet with us for one hour where we go over your medical history and gather any other relevant information. We do a series of non-invasive processes to begin to assess your needs. We visit with you until all your questions and concerns are answered. At that time, we schedule a second appointment with you to discuss our finds. This will give us time to go over your situation and create a customized plan of action that meets your needs.

Second office visit – includes a report of our findings, a plan of action, time commitment involved on your part, and the cost for each visit. If you are comfortable with the plan we outline, we start with the initial NAET® treatment.

What occurs at subsequent NAET® appointments?

When you come in for a follow-up appointment, we test to see that the treatment we performed on the previous visit is complete or has “cleared.” From there, we test to determine the best treatment for that day and then perform the optimal NAET® desensitization treatment that we feel best addresses your needs.

How was NAET® developed?

NAET® was created by Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad, a California acupuncturist, chiropractor, and a kinesiologist (focuses on the optimum flow of energy within the body), in an attempt to relieve herself of severe allergic symptoms suffered since birth. While working on her Ph.D., she observed that people presenting allergic symptoms often responded favorably to acupuncture or acupressure treatment.

Dr. Nambudripad recognized a relationship between contact with an allergen and the resulting neuro-physiological effects produced in the body. She began to discover the key to the mystery of how the brain can be reprogrammed in its response to what it once viewed to be harmful or toxic.

Her own experience and personal interest led her to develop NAET®, and to specialize exclusively in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies. She has trained more than 9,000 medical practitioners from all over the world (chiropractors, acupuncturists, medical doctors, dentists, doctors of osteopathy, doctors of veterinary medicine are some among the group). To date, thousands and thousands of patients successfully have been treated, with amazing results.

At Integrative Health and Allergy Center (IHAC), we experience every week, patients who come back to us and testify the positive outcomes of NAET® treatments. We could fill an entire book of patient testimonials! Visit our testimonial page for details.
